We’ll revisit This is How We Do It by Matt Lamothe and listen to Ms. King read Where Are You From by Yamile Saied Mendez. The kids will set up an interview to learn more about their family heritage. Read more about the lessons on my blog.

Today I discussed bias by introducing the bias blob that gets in the way and blocks our view. We read Amazing Grace and discussed how some kids in the story said things that hurt her feelings because of their biases.

Today we talk about why a character in Amazing Grace had bias and said a racist comment. We talked about white privilege, racist ideas, racism, and Black Lives Matters. We listened to Jelani Memory read his book "A Kids Book About Racism".

Today we talked about how to be an ally. I had toys act out a situation that was unfair, and shared three books: "One" by Kathryn Otoshi and listened to Sanofka read "Intersection Allies" by Chelsea Johnson, LaToya Council, and Carolyn Choi, and listened to Saladin Allah read "A is for Activism" by Innosanto Nagara.

Here are descriptions of this week’s lessons (I still need to add to this).

We sang, we read, we played, we danced, we created, and we said "see you soon."

(this day was a more typical Fun Friday, not so much of an anti-racism lesson day)

Week 11: Our Book Project + Subtraction

To prepare to write our how to guides for fun things to do at home, the kids helped me make a pb+j sandwich. Then we played subtraction bowling and also did a brain dance with funny feathers from the estimation jar.

We read One Love again and I invited kids to talk to their families about how you show love. We wrote the how to part of our guides and played subtraction squish.

We counted 50 things by sorting them into groups. Then the kids wrote a whole paragraph sharing their opinion about their how-to idea.

We talked a lot about communities, what's in our own community, and what makes up a community. The kids played a “Roll A Community” (see image >>>) and also did a brain dance. Tomorrow we will vote for an organization that we would like to support in our community.

Roll a Community: Roll two dice, add them and draw the image on your picture that matches. 3=apartments, 4 = sidewalk, road, or river, 9 or 12 = business or service.

Today we voted on an organization that our book will support. So not only will the how to book help give others great ideas of fun things to do at home, but the money we make will support Black Mamas Matter since that is the organization the kids voted for!

Week 9+10: Poetry

We started off our poetry study by reading The Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni to think about how letters become words and how words can tell important messages. For math we did Splat 1.1 by Steve Wyborney. I needed to interact with the kids so I didn’t video it- you can download and play here

We read One Love to think about how songs are poems- we hear and sing poems all the time! Then we played tally grab and made a bird’s eye view picture.

It’s spoon day! Really! We read Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosenthal to learn about personification. Then the kids play a spoon grab game that’s kind of like the splat game we played on Monday.

It’s a day to play with alliteration! We read some poems, practicing the beginning sounds of our names and I got the kids started on a poem where they write about people they love. Then we played 1-2 Nim- you can learn all about it here at Math For Love.

Onomatopoeia day! We played Splat 1.2 which can be found https://stevewyborney.com/2017/02/splat/ here..I didn't include it in the video since the kid's faces were on the screen.

It's Animal Day! I read poems about animals, sang an animal song and the kids play a game with animals.

We practiced writing similes and shape poems. Then we played "Roll a Creature" and watched the butterfly release!

. . .

A note! We’ll be live on Friday for an art play date (the video won’t be posted). Contact me if you’d like to join our zoom call.

Week 8: Our Incredible Selves

This week is all about ourselves! What makes us special and what makes us similar to each other. Today we read "Not Quite Narwhal" by Jessie Sima and drew a picture of ourselves in the place where we feel the most like ourselves. Then we counted things in our rooms and kept track of what we counted.

We read "We're Different, We're the Same" and drew pictures of some of the things our bodies can do. We did a brain dance to think about how our bodies move. After the estimation jar and math talk we ran out of time so we'll do more math tomorrow!

We did a math game called “Roll and Trace” if you need the worksheet please email me for the pdf. Then I read Howard B. Wigglebottom Listens to His Heart and planned a question we could ask a grown up we love.

We read “The Day You Begin” then got right to math! We had number celebrations with a fun math confetti game.

Instead of a live Friday class, we're making sight word / letter jars. You'll need a jar/plastic bottle, some rice/beans, thick paper, scissors, a marker, and some fun little items like sparkles or little animals to put in your jar. I also read "Pigeon Wants a Puppy" by Mo Willems.

Week 7: Sports Week

We started off Sports Week by looking at books to decide if they are fiction or non-fiction, then looked for text features. We talked about doubles in math and learned a new chant that can help us count doubles on our hands. {Journal: this weekend I... }

We looked again at text features and did a scavenger hunt in books to find photos, captions, table of contents, etc. Then we drew a basketball court and the kids practiced counting doubles. Finally, we looked into the art of Pejac again.

The kids drew their own sport/game! It was a great practice in creativity! Then we sorted our dominoes- these are a great toy to play with numbers and I hoped to start this practice. Then the kids added to their Pejac art.

We got to hear Tameka Freyer Brown read “My Cold Plum Lemon Pie Bluesy Mood” then we drew about how we feel when we do our favorite sport and made a graph of our favorite sports.

Fun Friday! We moved chrysalides to their butterfly habitat. We did a ball bounciness analysis. Then I read Mixed: A Colorful Story by Arree Chung which inspired some expressive dot art.

We used our collections of 20 things to play Grab and Count. Finally, we drew an animal that you would find in the Emergent Layer of the Rainforest, can you guess what it is? Please do let me know if you’re watching these and I’ll try to make sure to say hello on camera to your child! You can email me at hello@aneladeisler.com.

Day 13: Wednesday, April 8

A Ram Sam Sam! The kids did speed writing with their letters and word cards. We read the first half of The Great Kepok Tree and used our five question words on our hands to use details to talk about the story. The kids drew their prediction of what would happen next. We’ll find out tomorrow! In math we played a bug game working on numbers 1-10. You can make your own bug game up to 20 or more at home! We finished with drawing a sloth.
