Illuminating Roots | Getting Ready | Anela Deisler Photography

I’ve been thinking and studying a lot about identity and diversity. How in the world can I teach my kids to love themselves and also love others? How can I encourage a respectful appreciation, curiosity, and acceptance of the beautiful diversity of humans. Many studies say we need to start with ourselves.

So this December I’m starting a project where my kids will study their grandparents. Each from different places and have roots in Japan, Hawaii, England, Ireland, Poland, Germany, Norway, and more. I want them to learn about their diverse and complex roots so they begin to understand the depth of others.

I welcome you to join me, here’s how I’m starting:

Step 1: Talk to family members and get them thinking. My mom plans on finding recipes. My dad will write up what will likely be a very long email, maybe with a spreadsheet. I love them. Now I know family’s complex, you could certainly do this without including family members, if so today just brainstorm 3-4 cultures you’d like to study.

Also, to challenge myself in my photography, I will take one photo 4x or more a week that will be freelensed and in black and white. #illumiating_roots
